Opelika City Council approved a slate of routine resolutions and ordinances during its Dec. 2 meeting, including a small settlement sign-off, zoning changes and an annual appropriation to the chamber of commerce.
Council approved acceptance of a settlement and release related to a class-action matter involving Discover card payment processing; staff characterized the city—s share as nominal. The council approved the second reading of an ordinance to change zoning at 1401 Speedway Drive (1.933 acres from R5M to C2) and introduced a first reading for an ordinance to rezone 48.06 acres at 2051 Alabama Highway 169 (R-1 to C-3).
The council also approved the annual appropriation contract for fiscal year 2026 with the Opelika Chamber of Commerce in the amount of $115,000. Council member Rowe announced an abstention from the chamber appropriation vote due to a relationship with the chamber president and asked that the signed resolution be filed with the State Ethics Commission; the motion carried with recorded ayes and one abstention.
