Rock County endorses state bills to expand utility aid for storage facilities

The Rock County Board voted to support state Senate Bill 556 and Assembly Bill 559, measures intended to provide utility aid payments for energy storage facilities.
Supervisor Schwartz pulled the item from consent for discussion and asked about local impact. A supervisor responding to the question said Rock County currently receives about $4,000,000 from utility aid programs and that expanding aid to include certain storage or liquefied natural gas facilities could increase county receipts. He noted a planned liquefied natural gas storage project in Beloit Township that could affect future distributions if the bills pass.
Board members described the bills as relatively modest statewide measures (one supervisor said recent research suggested roughly $5,000,000 at the state level tied to the proposal) and expressed support for seeking to ensure counties receive appropriate shares when new utility investments occur. After discussion the board approved the support resolution by voice vote.
The resolution will be forwarded in accordance with standard clerk procedures.
