District staff preview science curriculum review and midyear assessments

District academic staff on Dec. 8 updated the Cedar Springs board on several instructional initiatives and assessments.
At the middle‑school level staff have reviewed six curriculum options and visited neighboring districts using MyStar and Open Science Ed; staff said they may propose a formal adoption in the spring after pilots and additional feedback. The district’s literacy and tier‑1 instruction work continues with support from ISD consultants.
Staff also outlined the upcoming midyear benchmarking schedule: Universal Number Screener and Acadience this month, and i‑Ready in January (benchmark windows beginning the week of Jan. 12 at Cedar Trails and later in the month for other buildings). At the high‑school level staff described the state’s replacement of ACT WorkKeys with the WIN work‑readiness assessment, which staff said better aligns with employer expectations.
Finally, staff noted the Perkins V two‑year continuous needs‑assessment requirement for the Ag Science program; regional submission is due in April and staff are compiling data for the GEMS MARS system.
The board did not take action; staff said they will return with materials and potential adoption proposals in coming months.
