Vancouver School District board reviews policy updates, schedules second reading on discipline

The Vancouver School District Board of Directors received a briefing on multiple policy updates during a short meeting that included roll call and a handoff to Superintendent Blokesmith.
Taylor Richmond, who presented the procedural and policy highlights, said the district posted a clarification to the student discipline code and a revised definition of “closed campus” to cover students leaving without permission and students who enter other campuses without authorization. “This is just a clarification, in that discipline code guide, which is posted on BoardDocs,” Richmond said.
Richmond also introduced a first read of policy 21-70, the district’s career and technical education policy, describing revisions to the nondiscrimination statement intended to align district language with state law (RCW 28A.642.010). Richmond said the updates are part of a broader effort to bring all policies that include nondiscrimination language into alignment with the cited statute.
The board was reminded that policy 32-41, the student discipline policy, will be brought back for a second reading next week; Richmond said the revision was recommended by WASDA to align local policy with new OSPI student discipline rules that took effect this school year. There were no questions recorded on the items during the meeting.
The superintendent noted there was no superintendent report and no contracts requiring approval at this meeting; any contracts for consideration will be brought to the Dec. 9 board meeting. The board adjourned after the short agenda and set the next general meeting for Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Bates.
