Knox County Commission asks TDOT to study Western Knoxville bypass

The Knox County Commission unanimously approved a resolution on Jan. 17 urging the Tennessee Department of Transportation and state legislators to study the potential for a new highway bypass around Knoxville.
Commissioner Justin Jay, who introduced the resolution, said the measure aims to put the bypass concept back into statewide study processes and to prompt consideration of long‑range options for congestion relief. Jay cited research noting Knoxville’s role as a regional crossroads and said the resolution would help put the idea on the agenda with the county’s state delegation and TDOT: "I think doing nothing is not an option," Jay said.
Commissioner May suggested aligning the county measure with a Transportation Planning Organization study that had previously requested TDOT consider congestion solutions. Several commissioners asked to be added as co‑sponsors; the motion to move forward passed by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The resolution asks state partners to convene study and planning resources; it does not appropriate county funds or commit the county to any specific route, cost estimate or timeline.
