West York Area SD hears student council and music program, approves routine action items

The West York Area SD board heard a series of presentations from students and staff, recognized student contributors to the district’s holiday card, and approved routine consent and personnel items before adjourning.
Student council president Sarah Manning reported that the high school drama department staged a successful play, the student pantry had two successful distributions and will hold two more in December, and the student council decorated school spaces for the holiday season. Manning said the high school band and choir will perform community concerts and extended holiday greetings to the board.
Staff announced that two student artists, Caleb Patrick and Sahali Arnold, were selected for the district’s holiday cards; winners were presented certificates and art supply bags and staff said the cards will be shared with community partners and placed on display in district facilities.
Laurie Kumantes, head of music at the middle school, described the district’s world music drumming curriculum and led students in a short demonstration of an African highlife-inspired ensemble, an island-style ensemble, and a Latin piece. Kumantes said the curriculum emphasizes listening, respect for personal space, leading/following and cultural learning.
Chair opened public comment and none was offered. The chair then moved to approve action items E1 through E10; a motion to approve was made and seconded and the items were approved by voice vote. The board then considered personnel item F and approved the personnel actions by voice vote. The chair closed the meeting with holiday wishes and adjourned by unanimous voice vote.
What happens next: staff will post finalized financial statements when available and return to the board for approval in January; student and arts programming will continue through scheduled holiday concerts.
