The Orinda City Council presented Mayor's Awards of Excellence on Monday to the Moraga-Orinda Fire District and to the Orinda-Tabor Sister City Foundation, thanking both for long-standing service to the community.
Mayor's remarks recognized MOFD's role in expanding interagency preparedness, including expanded tabletop exercises for large-scale evacuations, enhanced onboarding training with Orinda police and the placement of a dedicated, fully staffed ambulance in the city. Accepting the recognition, a MOFD leader said, "It's been an honor and a privilege to serve and work with the city staff and the council members," and thanked City Manager Linda Smith by name.
The council also recognized the Orinda-Tabor Sister City Foundation for running a decades-long student-exchange program and for volunteer-led community activities such as WinterFest's gingerbread-house contest. Foundation members described the screening process for visiting students and the commitment of host families; Cheryl Cechbella, who identified herself as a recent foundation member, said, "The students we bring over are amazing."
Council members praised both organizations for partnership and community service, noting volunteer time and interagency collaboration as essential to the city's emergency readiness and cultural programming. The council recorded written public comment on the MOFD item but closed oral public comment after no speakers signed up.
The recognitions were presented as part of the council's reorganization meeting and were followed by other agenda items including consent calendar votes and policy discussions.
