Cibolo council approves community response drive with San Antonio Food Bank support

The Cibolo City Council on Monday approved a community response drive to connect residents with social, mental, financial and food resources, including a pledge of 200 produce bags from the San Antonio Food Bank.
Councilwoman Sanchez Stevens introduced the coordinated effort and asked that the city waive community center rental and provide limited staff support for publicity and computer access. For the event she asked for use of the city’s electronic message center signs, social media postings, the city website and two public-access laptops from the library.
“We are reaching out to our local churches just as well to see if they could be hands and feet to distribute these and also, offer up resources, prayer, food that they can walk away with,” Sanchez Stevens said while describing partnerships with local nonprofits and the school district.
Mario Abledo Jr., chief of government and public affairs for the San Antonio Food Bank, told council his agency would deliver 200 produce bags and provide information about other distribution points and a call center for families seeking help. “We are going to deliver, 200 produce bags to the event,” Abledo said, and he directed residents to safoodbank.org or (210) 431-8326 for help and additional resources.
Council and staff discussed logistics, including a registration link and hourly sign-up windows to reduce congestion, volunteer roles to assist with heavy 25‑pound bags, and the option of off‑duty law enforcement for traffic control. Staff told council the event would run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and that churches would set up tables inside the community center to hand out resource information while the food bank’s produce bags would be distributed on site.
An unnamed councilmember moved to approve the organizer’s requests and to authorize up to $400 from the council budget for security if needed; the motion was seconded and carried in a council roll-call vote. City staff will finalize logistics, publish promotional materials through the communications manager and post volunteer sign-up links.
The council approved the request and staff said they will return any necessary incidental expenditures for formal inclusion in a budget amendment if required.
