Hamilton County Schools' board on Nov. 20 approved moving forward with a district‑wide relighting project aimed at replacing older fixtures, improving classroom light levels and cutting lighting energy consumption by roughly 40%, presenters said.
Presenters told the board the work is districtwide except where LED upgrades are already in place or where buildings are on an active construction plan. Staff said the project is designed with manufacturer/installer crews who can complete large installations quickly, sometimes performing night shifts to minimize disruption.
The project financing is contingent on two items staff identified: a roughly $700,000 incentive from TBA and county commission approval to use ESI financing at a 1.5% loan rate. Staff said they are targeting a summer construction start if the contingencies (incentive and county approval) fall into place in early next year.
Board members asked about project sequencing and timelines, and staff described a plan to exclude already‑upgraded schools and to coordinate with the county on financing. The board voted to approve the project authorization, and staff will return with any required financing approvals for county commission consideration.
The board recorded the approval by roll call and gave staff direction to proceed with required financing steps and vendor coordination.
