Sustainability committee approves expanded Sustainable Middleton Awards categories

The Middleton Sustainability Committee voted to expand and professionalize the Sustainable Middleton Awards program, adding categories for green building, student leadership and sustainable city staff.
Deb and a small subgroup revised the award language and application to broaden eligibility and increase submissions. Among the changes, the committee removed the previously required photo attachment from the application (now recommended but optional), tightened category definitions, and extended the application window to Feb. 28 to allow more time after the holidays.
Alder Schafer moved to approve the additional categories and the motion was seconded; the committee approved the change by voice vote with staff instructed to publish the updated information page and application on Dec. 1.
Committee members discussed outreach and promoted use of city PR channels and available budget for digital outreach; staff said they will push announcements in late December/January and use remaining discretionary funds where appropriate.
Next steps: staff to publish the updated application on Dec. 1, run an outreach push in January, and accept nominations through Feb. 28.
