MMSD survey finds strong demand for Middleton blending-valve pilot

City staff told the Middleton Sustainability Committee that the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) blending-valve pilot has generated strong early interest.
Kelly said the MMSD flyer in the city utility insert drew 107 survey responses within a few days. Staff then screened respondents for equipment compatibility; about 27 households so far have systems that appear compatible and MMSD expects to identify the 48 participants its funding will support.
“After just a few days, they had 107 applicants,” Kelly said. She added that MMSD will follow participants for three months to gather feedback on water taste and acceptability and that the program will run through the year. The pilot is intended to test blending valves as a tool to reduce chloride loading in streams; staff said MMSD recognizes it is only one tool among several to address chloride.
Residents interested in participating were encouraged to contact the city for a referral to MMSD’s program coordinator, Emily Jones.
