Buellton — The Buellton City Council on Thursday paused its agenda to honor local youth who have earned "gold cards" from the Boys & Girls Club for attending club programs at least 105 days this year.
Valerie Morris, director of the Boys & Girls Club chapters in Buellton and Solvang, told the council the award recognizes children who attend programs regularly and cited studies showing that consistent participation in after-school and youth programs is associated with higher school achievement and lower likelihood of dropping out or joining gangs. "This is important," Morris said, "because students who attend regularly do better in school and with their peers."
Council members lined the dais and shook hands with recipients from kindergarten through sixth grade, posed for group photographs and offered thanks to parents and club volunteers. Mayor Silva, Council Members Hornick and Mead and others joined Morris in presenting cards and praising the program's community impact.
City officials said the presentation was moved earlier in the meeting to accommodate families attending the ceremony and to allow the council to take a formal record of the presentation. The celebration included a series of grade-level photo opportunities and brief remarks encouraging further community involvement in youth programs.
No formal council action was required for the presentation. The ceremony adds to a series of local events the council and staff cited at the meeting as examples of civic and nonprofit partnerships that support children and families in Buellton.
The council moved next to its regular agenda after the presentation.
