The Historic Zoning Commission approved an exterior rehabilitation package covering three adjacent storefronts in Market Square (22, 18 and 16 Market Square) at its Dec. 18 meeting.
Staff described masonry repair and tuckpointing, repair and replacement of second-story windows with historically appropriate profiles, reconstruction of an upper cornice for one storefront based on historic photographs, and installation of canvas and flat aluminum-clad awnings and a retractable rooftop sunshade. The staff recommended approval subject to masonry repair meeting National Park Service specifications and submission of final window replacement details to staff for approval. Architect Jimmy Ryan confirmed the replacement windows would be aluminum-clad with historic profiles.
Commissioners praised the return of architectural details and voted to approve the work by voice vote. Staff noted that several rooftop and sunshade features in Market Square have been installed historically without permits but that the proposed sunshade and supports are proportionate and removable and therefore acceptable under guidelines.
Next steps: Applicant to submit final window profiles and masonry specifications and proceed with permits.
