Clayton council approves painting bid, asbestos inspection and plans to address firehouse wells
Summary
Council accepted a $5,900 bid to repaint the fire department building, authorized an asbestos inspection for the burn house ($600 flat rate quoted), and approved a plan to inspect/replace a failing well (estimated $5,000–$10,000) using available fire department funds if needed.

The Town of Clayton council approved several items tied to fire department facility maintenance. After reviewing one responsive bid for exterior painting, council accepted the contractor's quote (staff referenced preparation work and Sherwin-Williams paint) and agreed to encumber fire department funds for the spring painting job.
Chief Bolton briefed the council on personnel and monthly call activity and raised two facilities issues: a 1976 well that supplies the firehouse (inspected and reported as serviceable) and a 1994 well that requires additional attention. An inspector (Eli English referenced) recommended pulling the 1994 well for full inspection and suggested replacement could be more cost effective. Staff estimated a replacement cost range of about $5,000 on the low end to about $10,000 on the high end depending on actual depth and condition.
Council also considered an asbestos inspection for the department's burn house. The vendor Agus Environmental (Greenwood) quoted a flat $600 fee to inspect the entire building. Council voted to proceed with the asbestos inspection; if asbestos is found, the council directed staff to seek quotes for abatement and, if necessary, encumber funds and address the well after abatement work is planned. Council members noted the fire department had sufficient remaining funds (reported as approximately $16,002.75) to cover the likely expenses if required.
What happens next: staff will schedule the asbestos inspection, obtain abatement quotes if needed, and, depending on results, pursue the well replacement or repair using available fire department funds and next year's budget encumbrances as appropriate.
