Board advances policy language to allow employee support organizations limited campus access
Summary
After debate about principal discretion and comparability with other community groups, trustees advanced a redlined first reading of DGA local policy to permit employee support organizations access to campuses with advance notice and conditions.
The board considered redlined revisions to local policy DGA that clarify access to district facilities by employee support organizations and how those groups are approved.
Administration presented updated language following the earlier deletion of policy DGB. The revisions require advance notice and identify that such access must not conflict with safety, instructional time or facility availability. Several trustees questioned whether principals would retain sufficient discretion to deny access and whether similar treatment should apply to community groups such as the YMCA. Trustee Freeman voiced concern that the policy could place an onus on principals to justify denials; trustees discussed balancing staff support organizations’ access with campus autonomy.
After discussion a motion to accept the revised language as a first reading (with further review and a potential consent listing on Jan. 13) carried. Administration said staff will return with clarified language and legal review before final adoption.
