Decatur swears in Nathan Kyle Springer as fire chief

In his remarks after the oath, Chief Nathan Kyle Springer thanked family, mentors and fellow firefighters and cited a set of core values he said will guide the department. “As we move forward, together our service will be grounded in a clearly defined set of core values, including respect, teamwork, accountability, and professionalism,” Springer said. He told the audience the department will emphasize strategic planning, leadership growth and training so firefighters “have the tools, training, and direction needed to be safe, healthy, and successful.”
Springer also paid tribute to former Chief Tracy Thornton, whom the transcript records as having served more than 26 years with the department, including the last five as fire chief. Mayor Lawrence invited attendees to a reception on the 7th Floor following the formal ceremony.
Judge Tequisha Golston administered the oath in which Springer affirmed he would support the constitutions of the United States and the State of Alabama and would “faithfully discharge the duties of the office of fire chief of the city of Decatur.” The ceremony included an invocation by Minister Steve Smith of Bellheim Church of Christ and a vocal performance of the national anthem by Sophie Crowley, a senior at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy.
A reception followed the ceremony.
