The Hart County Board of Commissioners reviewed and acted on multiple alcohol-license renewal applications during its Dec. 9 meeting. Class A (restaurants and private clubs) renewals for establishments including Hartwell Golf Club, El Perion Mexican (Charles A. Finley), The Beacon Bed and Breakfast (GM 5 Hospitality LLC/Catherine Graham), and Boathouse Grill (Scott Barfield) were presented as "in order" and approved by unanimous vote.
The board raised an issue with the renewal application for John Rausz doing business as Tilly’s Tiki Bar and Grill, and moved to deny the renewal pending further evaluation. Commissioner Brown moved to deny the renewal; Commissioner Bennett seconded. The board clarified that the action was to deny the renewal beginning Jan. 1 (not a revocation of an existing license), and the motion to deny was recorded and acted on in the meeting.
Board members also approved multiple Class B (convenience-store/off-premises) beer-and-wine renewals for several stores listed in the packet; those motions passed unanimously. The board later moved to deny a distilled-spirits license for Tilly’s Tiki Bar and Grill (motion by Commissioner Bennett, second by Commissioner Brown).
Why it matters: Alcohol-license decisions affect local businesses and enforcement obligations for the county; a denial of renewal can change a business’s ability to sell alcohol beginning at the license renew-date. The board emphasized the denial was for renewal and not a revocation of a currently valid license.
Next steps: Affected applicants will be notified according to county licensing procedures; the denial for Tilly’s takes effect at renewal date unless appealed or otherwise resolved.
