Bloomington’s Creative Placemaking Wins APA Minnesota Diversity Award

The city’s Creative Placemaking plan received the APA Minnesota ‘Advancing Diversity and Social Change’ award for citywide engagement and cultural projects, city staff and commissioners told the council Nov. 24.
Bloomington’s Creative Placemaking program was honored Nov. 24 with the American Planning Association Minnesota’s “Advancing Diversity and Social Change” award, city staff announced during the city council meeting.
Alejandra Plinca, director of Creative Placemaking, and Mike Palermo, president of APA Minnesota’s chapter, described the award as recognition for inclusive engagement and the citywide creative placemaking plan that grew from South Loop pilot efforts begun in 2016. Plinca said the plan “lifts up diverse perspectives, strengthening belonging, and using art and culture to connect our community.”
Commissioner Cote highlighted recent projects, including “Hante, the Healing Bridge Mural and Native Plant Garden” at the Cedar Avenue Bridge, created by local artist Sandy Spieler and Dakota cultural educator Tara Perron. The city acknowledged Forecast Public Art and its executive director Teresa Sweetland for consulting on the plan’s development.
The council and presenters characterized the award as a validation of ongoing engagement with residents, artists and community partners. No formal council action was required; the recognition was presented as an informational item at the start of the meeting.
