Doral Council Approves Special-event Permit for Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia

The City of Doral on Monday voted unanimously to approve a special-event permit and use of the city logo for the Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia, a 95‑mile cycling event that will start and finish at Doral City Place on Feb. 7–8, 2026.
Guillermo Nascimento, assistant director of planning and zoning, told the council the applicant, Eduardo Orozco on behalf of Leon Sports, is expecting about 1,000 attendees and that parking for participants will be provided on-site. Nascimento said the course would travel across several municipalities from Doral to Homestead and that the request does not require permanent street closures, only temporary traffic controls for the event.
Orozco told council members the event organizers would like to hold a public launch in a city space or at City Place, and that staff and organizers will coordinate timing and logistics with parks and City Place management. "We would like to make the announcement, like, launch the event in a public space," Orozco said during the presentation.
City leaders asked staff to coordinate with parks and City Place to advertise the event using the city’s channels if the council authorizes use of the city logo. The council voted to approve the resolution after a motion by Councilwoman Reynoso and a second by Vice Mayor Cabral.
The permit resolution includes standard implementation language and an effective date; staff will continue working with organizers on logistics, timing, and required temporary traffic measures. The council did not authorize any permanent street changes.
