El Paso County Commissioners on Monday adopted a resolution declaring November 2025 as Diabetes Awareness Month and recognized the El Paso Center for Diabetes, the Diabetes Alliance, and the Paso del Norte Health Foundation for regional prevention and management efforts.
Judge Samaniego read the resolution, which cites that "more than 97,000 El Pasoans are living with diabetes and an estimated 25,000 more remain undiagnosed" and emphasizes prevention, early detection and education. Audrey Garcia of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation and Sandra from the El Paso Center for Diabetes described new and expanded services including free A1C screening, community-based prevention programs and Type 1 diabetes camps for children.
Speakers noted cross-border and regional coordination with Southern New Mexico and Ciudad Juarez, educational partnerships with UTEP and NMSU, and programs linking dental screening and diabetes detection. Sandra said the center still offers free type 1 camps and described fundraising efforts to sustain those programs.
The court unanimously approved the resolution and thanked partners and volunteers. Commissioners highlighted the regional nature of diabetes and encouraged residents to visit www.diabetesnowwhat.org for risk tests and resources (as read in the resolution).
Next steps: the recognized organizations will continue outreach and screening; commissioners said they will support partnerships that expand access to prevention and management services across the Paso del Norte region.
