The Elkhart City Board of Parks and Recreation voted unanimously Dec. 2 to approve a procurement to update picnic tables, trash cans and benches across the park system.
Staff described a parks inventory that identified worn or vandalized units and said the new purchases aim to improve durability and appearance. "A lot of them are still green barrels that people just dump a lot into," staff said, describing the inventory and theft/vandalism concerns. Staff also said buildings and grounds will install the new units and that some items may be refurbished locally for cost savings.
Board members discussed expected lifespans for the new products; staff said the items are expected to last about five years under typical review cycles and staff are hopeful higher-quality units could last closer to 10 years with refurbishment options.
The board moved and approved the site-amenities purchase memo unanimously.
What happens next: Buildings and grounds will schedule installation, and staff will monitor durability and consider refurbishment options to extend service life.
