Public-health coalition asks council to explore ordinance on new tobacco retailers; council refers issue to staff

Dr. Dave Keeley, representing a tobacco coalition, told council that since Jan. 1 there have been more than 40 new registrants with the South Carolina Department of Revenue selling tobacco products in York County, and he asked to present the coalition’s proposal at a council work session to outline a recommended ordinance restricting new tobacco retailers in specific locations.
Later in the meeting, a councilmember asked that the matter be referred to staff and placed on a committee agenda for review and possible next steps. Staff were directed to prepare a report to committee on the issue for future consideration.
