Berkeley County commission adopts resolution mourning National Guard member, honors outgoing commissioner

The Berkeley County Deputy Sheriff Civil Service Commission on Dec. 17 adopted a resolution of sympathy after two National Guard members were shot in Washington, D.C., naming Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, who died, and Staff Sergeant Andrew (Andy) Wolf, who was seriously injured.

Dale Buck read the resolution into the record, saying the commission extends "its heartfelt sympathy to the family of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and honors her service and sacrifice" and expresses support and hope for the recovery of Staff Sergeant Andrew (Andy) Wolf. The resolution directs that a copy be provided to Sergeant Jason Wolf of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, identified in the resolution as the victim's father.

Unidentified Speaker (S4) moved to adopt the resolution and Unidentified Speaker (S3) seconded; the commission approved the motion by voice vote. The commission then momentarily paused to allow family members to come forward for a photo.

The commission also recognized Commissioner Steven D. Dobson at his final meeting. Dale Buck read certificates honoring Dobson's service from Feb. 10, 2022 through Dec. 31, 2025, and acknowledged Dobson's leadership in coordinating a rewrite of the commission's rules and regulations adopted June 18, 2025. A separate certificate recognizing Julie Dobson noted her support during his tenure.

The commission recessed briefly for family photos and then returned to business. No formal motions resulted from the recognition item beyond the adoption of the sympathy resolution.
