Board approves most human-resources items; abstentions cause several hires to fail

The Washington Township Board approved a slate of human-resources recommendations on Dec. 11 but recorded several abstentions that prevented votes on specific items from carrying.
During discussion, Speaker 6 said she would vote no on agenda items 5 and 6, which involve non-unit compensation and combining interim pay with base salary, and abstain on items 23–27. "So I'm a no to 5 and 6... Then I'm abstaining on '23, '24, '25, '26, and '27," Speaker 6 said, explaining her view that a flat 3% increase for non-unit employees skewed compensation relative to step-based teacher and support-staff increases.
Board members conducted roll-call votes. Item 5 passed; item 6 was broken into separate votes for two subcomponents (AM and JW) and the subcomponent votes carried when taken individually. However, items 23–27 lacked sufficient affirmative votes after multiple abstentions and failed to carry.
Board members observed some procedural confusion during tallying and agreed to clarify voting breakdowns in the minutes. Several speakers said the district will follow up with additional information about any apparent personnel-item overlaps or typographical errors in the agenda materials.
