During the opening portion of the Nov. 18 meeting, the board recognized staff and community partners and heard from student representatives and members of the Alliance group.
Steve Cook introduced Jennifer McGee as a district "champion of students" for supporting Wayfinder implementation at LePage Middle School and for her role in the school's summer learning program. The board highlighted the Ben Levine Education Foundation; the meeting recap noted the foundation has funded "over $71,000" in classroom grants.
Student voice council members from Bend High, Caldera High and Mountain View High raised concerns about standards‑based grading and how students understand academic performance under that system. Alliance group students described experiences of being queer and trans in district schools and urged continued district support to help students feel safe and welcome.
During public comment, Katie Bludgett (Alliance Group/Equity Coalition) praised district efforts on inclusion. Brandy Steelhammer (Summit High parent) reminded the public that free gun safety locks are available at the Bend‑LaPine Schools district office and encouraged pickup. Jesse Bledsoe (High Lakes parent) advocated for continued commitment to music education across the district.
The meeting also noted Ruby Bridges events and several Excellence in Education awards, including naming Chris Boyd, principal of Caldera High School, administrator of the year.
