County approves Conrad Schmidt Studios contract to restore Courthouse 1 interior; budgeted funds and a small Board bridge requested

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners voted to approve an interior restoration contract with Conrad Schmidt Studios for Courthouse 1.
Bree Roberts, director of physical assets, explained the scope: medallion murals, lunette murals, the rotunda dome and two wing courtrooms damaged by water infiltration. “Conrad Schmidt has been with us since the beginning of this project ... This contract is for, 4 medallion murals, 2 lunette murals, the rotunda dome, as well as the 2 wing courtrooms,” Roberts said. She told the board $800,000 is already budgeted in the 2025 Superior Court capital fund and asked the Board to provide $44,111 from the Board of Commissioners furniture and fixtures account to bridge the gap.
Roberts said the work is highly specialized and that she attempted to obtain a comparable bid from another conservation/restoration firm but was unable to obtain a full proposal; she recommended proceeding with Conrad Schmidt, which already holds one removed medallion mural.
After a motion, second and roll-call Ayes, the board approved the contract and asked staff to proceed with contract execution and fund allocation.
