St. Joseph County approves agreement allowing Amazon to build Larson Road bypass in New Carlisle

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners voted to approve an agreement with Amazon Data Services that allows Amazon to construct a bypass for a portion of Larson Road on its property in New Carlisle.
Skye Metters of the Department of Infrastructure Planning and Growth described the agreement as a public‑safety and traffic‑management measure. “What this agreement does is it'll it allows them to build that road and it's on their property, then it would become our right of way once it was built and we would maintain it for, I believe, 2 years,” Metters said. She added that Amazon would repair the existing Larson/Lisonbee area between the limits where the road had been closed.
Metters told the commissioners that the bypass would reduce the need for employees and trucks to cross an active road and lower the chance of queuing on public roads. Commissioners asked whether the bypass would be built to county specifications; Metters said plans have already been approved and that the agreement contains language giving county staff direction and control over how the reconstruction is done.
The board approved the Larson Road agreement by voice vote after a motion and second. Commissioners recorded Ayes in favor of the agreement.
Next steps include documenting the county’s temporary maintenance responsibilities and confirming funding and construction oversight per the agreement language.
