Avon council approves $37,600 design proposal for County Road 575 sidewalk connection

The Avon Town Council voted to approve a proposal to hire Banning Engineering to design a sidewalk extension along County Road 575, a project staff said will connect a relocated Easton Gray traffic signal to the Washington Township Park and adjacent dog park.
Staff explained the pedestrian crossing becomes viable once the signal is relocated and a sidewalk exists on both sides of the road; state traffic officials (INDOT) will not allow a crossing that dead-ends onto no sidewalk. Banning Engineering — which completed engineering work for the Easton Gray development and other town trail projects — submitted a proposal that staff said would cover design and surveying work for roughly $37,600.
Councilors were told this action authorizes design work only; construction funding would come later and would require separate approval. Speaker 6 moved to approve the proposal for the sidewalk extension design on County Road 575 East; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call.
Staff said creating the sidewalk connection would provide access to about 150 parking spaces at Washington Township Park and improve pedestrian connections to the Riverwalk/Civic Center area. The design contract will allow staff to receive invoices for design and move toward construction planning and permitting.
