Golden Empire Transit to launch 'Tucan Trolley' downtown Jan. 7, 15-minute service Wed.–Sat.

Chris James, chief executive officer of Golden Empire Transit, told the Bakersfield City Council during public comment that the transit agency’s board approved a new downtown and Old Town Kern service called the "Tucan Trolley."
James said the service will begin Jan. 7, will run every 15 minutes Wednesday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., will operate down 18th Street between Q and H, circle Truxton and serve Old Town Kern restaurants, and that the one-way fare will be $1.65. He invited council members to a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Jan. 7 at the Chamber Building on 18th Street.
"The trolley represents progress and a commitment to public transit options that supports the local businesses downtown while reducing traffic congestion," James said. He identified the vehicle as the "Tucan Trolley"—named for the Thompson Petland Tucan building—and said the route is intended to make it easier for downtown residents, employees and visitors to explore the area.
James asked for council support for the new service and closed his remarks by wishing the council happy holidays. No council action was required during the meeting; the announcement was provided during the non-agenda public-comment period.
