Monroe County commissioners approve slate of budget amendments, sheriff grant application and surplus property sales

The Monroe County Commission on Nov. 25 approved a package of routine and budget-related actions that included amendments to the sheriff’s office and economic development budgets, authorization to apply for a Department of Justice equipment grant, and several surplus property declarations. Speaker 1 presented the items during the meeting.

The commission approved a trustee finance amendment described in the meeting as "Resolution 1125-6," an amendment to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department general fund budget to bring in funds for an insurance recovery for a sheriff’s motorcycle in the amount stated in the transcript as "2,006.22 65." Commissioners also moved to authorize submission of a Department of Justice application for sheriff’s equipment under "Resolution 1125-6a." The commission budgeted a previously approved economic development grant of $20,000 (Resolution 1125-6b) and allocated $15,000 to budget a previously approved sheriff training equipment grant (Resolution 1125-6c). Motions and seconds for these items were recorded and roll calls were requested.

On surplus property, the commission declared a 2017 Dodge Ram with a failing transmission surplus and placed it for sale; the meeting transcript records a cited sale price of $9,500 and questions about whether the vehicle had already sold. Speaker 2 asked, "This already sold in here. This is sold, right? What was the price of the rental? $9,500 $9,500." The item was motioned and a roll call was requested.

A separate resolution (1125-6e) declared several shared vehicles and military equipment surplus and directed placement of the items for sale with an attached list. During that discussion, Speaker 2 asked whether particular items would be donated or sold; staff replied those items would be sold on the county's chosen disposal platform.

The commission also approved a resolution to allow the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department to donate a Freightliner flatbed to the Cookwell Fire Department. "And this is the Freightliner flatbed that Danny was just speaking about," Speaker 1 said when introducing the donation.

Other routine business approved without extended debate included notary public applications, trustee monthly reports, and school board budget amendments (marked in the meeting as "Resolution number 7").
