Summary
Coral Springs commissioners unanimously approved Resolution 2025-5505 directing the city clerk to transmit opposition to HB 103 and SB 122, which would repeal section 205 of Florida Statutes on local business taxes; commissioners emphasised home-rule and local revenue impacts.
The Coral Springs City Commission unanimously approved Resolution 2025-5505 opposing House Bill 103 and Senate Bill 122, which the resolution says would repeal section 205 of the Florida Statutes relating to local business taxes.
City attorney/legislative liaison JJ introduced the resolution and asked the commission to approve and transmit it to appropriate legislators. "It's a request to approve. What this is is the business taxes that we do collect and that we often use to actually help support our businesses," JJ said in the presentation, describing the revenue's role in local business support and home-rule authority.
Commissioners discussed outreach and said they planned to engage authors and legislators when traveling for advocacy. Commissioner Simmons framed the commission's approach as protective rather than adversarial: "All I'll say is that, we're opposing it not necessarily, adversarial, but we're trying to make sure we are having — we have the tools that we could — we have access to the tools ... to keep our city the premier place to live, work, and raise a family." Commissioners voted to approve the resolution unanimously.
The resolution directs the city clerk to transmit the city's opposition and lists effective-date and transmission instructions in the adopted order. Commissioners said they expected to present additional resolutions and advocacy items in January as the legislature convenes.
