Jim Sarver, co-chair of the Coalition for Affordable Housing and Transit, used the public-comment period to urge joint planning around affordable housing near the rail trail, which he said will begin construction in January 2027.
Sarver said the coalition has been evaluating potential sites and identified a roughly 3-acre student parking area on the north side of the Durham School of the Arts property as a candidate for a large affordable-housing development close to the planned trail. He urged county and school board collaboration on a planning effort that would include community organizations and said the coalition will return to the boards with a formal proposal.
The comment was not a board action but was recorded for follow-up and future discussion between the county and the school district, including potential feasibility and timing aligned with student relocation plans referenced by the speaker.
