The Town Council approved a resolution on Dec. 16 to reassign a Cheshire High School HVAC capital project from the Public Building Commission to the Board of Education to enable an immediate renovation connected to private donations.
Board of Education representatives said an anonymous donor offered to fund new flooring and equipment for the school's weight room, but the room currently lacks HVAC, which would damage the equipment and flooring over time. Staff and Board of Education members explained that a capital account authorized in 2020 (item 13 59) still holds $268,000 and a rough order of magnitude estimates about $112,000 would be needed to fully air condition the weight room.
The resolution (121625-2) formally reassigns the project to the Board of Education so the Board can accept the donation and oversee installation; councilors noted this will not increase the overall town appropriation for the project. Council voted unanimously to approve the reassignment.
Council and staff said the Board of Education will coordinate construction and comment that HVAC in shared spaces is important to protect donor investments and ensure usable facilities year‑round.
