McAllen ISD holds special workshop to honor student achievements across academics, arts and athletics

McAllen Independent School District officials on Tuesday held a special workshop to honor dozens of students for achievements in academics, fine arts, athletics and dual-language programs. Board President Mr. Rivera opened the event and said the district did not have a quorum, so no formal action would be taken.
Dr. Gutierrez, who offered opening remarks, thanked parents and families for attending and praised the students’ accomplishments. "In our eyes and in our hearts, all of your kids are winners already," Dr. Gutierrez said, framing the evening as a ceremonial recognition of students who represented the district regionally, statewide and nationally.
District staff presented a long list of awards across programs. An unidentified presenter introduced Special Olympics bowling first-place winners from multiple campuses and named the coaches, supervisors and principals who accompanied them. The presenter also announced results from the 12th annual Javelina Math Camp competition at Texas A&M University–Kingsville and named top finishers and their teachers.
S3 noted that 22 elementary students earned Spanish 1 high school credit through the district’s dual-language program after meeting state criteria. The district also recognized AP Scholars, PSAT National Merit qualifiers and First-Generation Recognition award recipients from campuses including McAllen High, MacKay, Nikki Rowe, Memorial and Achieve Early College; campus AP coordinators and principals were named during the roll call of honorees.
Fine arts honors included All-Region and All-State qualifiers in band, choir, orchestra and mariachi; several students were noted as semifinalists in national vocal competitions and as recipients of congressional recognition in Washington. Athletics recognitions covered cross country regional qualifiers, all-district honors, district and bi-district champions in volleyball and football, and tennis placements. Coaches and athletic coordinators were identified alongside the student-athletes.
Board Trustee Roberto Haddad was noted as joining the meeting during the recognitions. Throughout the event presenters paused briefly for photographs of students and staff.
Mr. Rivera closed the workshop by thanking attendees and those watching online, offering holiday wishes and reiterating that no formal board business or votes occurred because of the lack of quorum.
The event was purely ceremonial; no motions, votes or binding decisions were taken.
