Commission backs rezoning to consolidate split zoning for Highway 17 storage project

The Putnam County Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend approval of REZ25000016, which would remove split zoning on a 1.85‑acre parcel at 147 South Highway 17 and place the entire site under Commercial Retail (C2) to allow development of an indoor storage facility.
Michael Graves, representing Planning and Development Services, told the commission that the parcel currently carries both commercial and residential estate zoning and that staff recommends consolidation to C2. ‘‘It is for that reason that staff recommends approval of their request to amend the zoning map from commercial retail and residential estate to commercial retail,’’ Graves said.
Owner Luke Ewels said the request corrects ‘‘an outdated zone line’’ and that the change will not alter current operations: ‘‘We are not changing operations, hours, or nature of our business, only correcting our outdated zone line,’’ he said. No members of the public spoke for or against the request.
A commissioner moved to approve the rezoning as consistent with the comprehensive plan; the motion passed unanimously and the recommendation will go to the Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 27.
