Council approves $29,360 design task order to relocate aging North Main sanitary sewer

City staff told the Fort Atkinson council on Dec. 16 that a sanitary sewer main on the east side of North Main Street is aging (clay pipe running through basements) and at risk of failure. To address the issue and to support potential redevelopment (a Premier Bank parking lot concept), staff proposed a design task order with Rooker and Milke for $29,360 to redesign the sanitary main to run through rear parking lots and to produce construction estimates.
Director Nadim said the pipe condition was observed during staff inspection and that failure could flood basements on Main Street. The design work is funded by the sanitary sewer utility operating funds and staff recommended approving the task order so plans will be ready if adjacent development proceeds; staff added it is prudent to have designs on file even if a particular private project does not move forward.
Council asked about immediate risk and contingency planning; staff said short‑term fixes would be possible but the design will allow a longer‑term, shovel‑ready approach. The council moved and approved the design task order by voice vote.
