The Historic Zoning Commission postponed review of an after‑the‑fact carport at 225 East Oklahoma Avenue after neighborhood representatives said the structure deviates from Old North guidelines and permitting staff flagged potential footings, alley clearance and inspection issues.

Staff reported that the carport was built in 2024 without a permit and noted it is not visible from the public right of way. Neighborhood representative Sean Bollin said neighborhoods generally do not support carports and were reluctant to endorse a precedent, though he acknowledged the structure was largely screened and minimally visible. The remote applicant said, to their knowledge, no footers had been dug and that the structure was movable.

Building and permitting staff told the commission the structure would be considered a permanent carport if it is used for parking and likely needs inspection and footings; engineering staff asked for time to confirm whether the current placement meets alley clearance and waste‑truck access standards. Commissioners discussed two options — postpone for detailed engineering and permitting review or approve with conditions allowing staff to make minor placement adjustments — and voted to postpone to allow technical review.

Staff recommended adding the carport to the shed permit and having permitting staff verify footings and location; commissioners asked that staff return with engineering recommendations and any revised placement before final action.
