Commission confirms Matt Bartolino as Birmingham fire chief

The Birmingham City Commission on Dec. 15 adopted a resolution confirming the city manager's appointment of assistant fire chief Matt Bartolino as the city's fire chief.
The city manager described Bartolino's 22 years with the department, noting his roles as captain, lieutenant and assistant chief and his service as interim chief since July 17. The commission moved and seconded the resolution; the vote passed unanimously.
Bartolino addressed the commission and audience after the vote. "I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as fire chief after 22 years with the department," he said, thanking family and colleagues who supported his career and pledging to serve "with integrity, commitment and heart." He then took the oath of office administered by the clerk.
The ceremony drew a large presence from department members and the mayor and commissioners thanked Bartolino for his service.
