Commission awards Old City Hall Park contract, staff proposes 'Grand Oak Park' name

The Dunedin City Commission unanimously approved Dec. 18 the award of ITB 25-2534 for the Old City Hall Park base bid ($486,258.25) and a brick-paver alternate ($28,770.30) to Molly Contracting Corporation for a total award of $515,028.55.
Economic development staff said the project is intended to activate the east end of downtown by creating a respite area, new sidewalks in a running-bond pattern and connections to adjacent businesses. Bob from economic development described the award and noted the bathrooms will be considered separately; the bathroom scope and procurement were deferred to a Jan. 22 commission meeting.
Commission discussion covered lighting, the absence of a dog park, bathroom siting, converting a one-way street to two-way circulation and parking impacts. Engineering staff said the restroom location was chosen in part to avoid disturbing an existing well and to preserve a large oak tree, and they confirmed the site was designed to maintain sightlines to Grand Street businesses.
Staff proposed naming options and recommended "Grand Oak Park" to reflect a legacy grand oak on the site and the historical name Oak Street for Main Street. The commission agreed to bring a naming resolution forward in a future agenda. The commission also approved the park award unanimously.
