Summary
The District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities moved a preliminary approval for an Art Week DC subcommittee and discussed partnerships and funding; staff said a consultant for the agency strategic plan is being contracted and formal strategic-plan approval was delayed pending corrected dates.
The District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities on Oct. 8 discussed plans for a weeklong Art Week DC event and gave preliminary approval for a subcommittee to develop the proposal.
Chair Reggie Van Lee said the initiative is intended "to position DC as a creative hub" and described prior outreach that included collectors, museum directors and events around United Nations General Assembly Week. Van Lee said the commission has partnered with the Rubell Collection and a private event partner to "deliver a best in class event" and to build relationships with galleries, curators and dealers.
When a commissioner asked whether the commission plans to create a nonprofit to run Art Week DC, Van Lee said commissioners are not authorized to create a 501(c)(3) and that the commission’s role would be to share the committee’s work with any outside entity that steps forward to carry the project. "We've not given up. Slowed down but not stopped," Van Lee said.
On funding, Van Lee said the mayor's office participated in stakeholder meetings but that specifics on city funding have not been finalized. He said the commission has a small budget line to keep planning work moving but described "real funding" as expected from public (non-city) sources and partner contributions rather than a single city appropriation.
A commissioner moved to bring the Art Week DC resolution forward for a preliminary vote. The resolution would establish a subcommittee with a one‑fiscal‑year runway, a committee chair, two voting commissioners and up to six nonvoting community members; the subgroup would be required to produce a report at the end of the fiscal year. Supporters on the call (including Gretchen and Hector George) seconded and confirmed readiness to participate.
The commission moved into executive session after preliminary approval and technical preparation to host the closed portion of the meeting.
Next steps: the commission indicated it will present the Art Week DC subcommittee recommendation to the full commission at a later public meeting; the resolution received preliminary support but the record does not show a final, roll‑call adoption in this session.
