Select Board conditionally renews dozens of business licenses, flags several for follow‑up
Summary
At its Dec. 16 meeting the Select Board approved renewals across multiple license categories (secondhand dealers, inn holders, lodging houses, alcohol, common victualler, food vendors, cannabis), conditionally extending many until Jan. 13 for missing paperwork and referring one alcohol license for a fire‑department disciplinary review.

The Brookline Select Board on Dec. 16 approved a large set of license renewals across multiple categories, while making conditional approvals for a substantial number of businesses that have not completed the town’s new online renewal process.
Licensing staff said this is the first full year the town has moved entirely to online applications, causing some businesses to miss complete submissions. To avoid service interruptions but preserve oversight, staff recommended conditional renewals for incomplete files with a deadline of Jan. 13 to finish missing materials.
The board approved renewal motions across the categories shown on the agenda: secondhand motor vehicle retailers (class 1 and 2) were renewed unanimously; secondhand articles and antiques were approved with three conditional items (Village Bridal, Zone Design, GameStop); inn holder renewals were approved with conditional clearance for Homewood Suites and Hilton Garden Inn; seven lodging‑house applications were approved conditionally (addresses listed in the staff report) and one property (16 William Street) was noted as closed and not recommended for renewal.
For alcohol licenses, staff recommended conditional renewals for 17 businesses; one business, Mariucci Select at 299 Harvard Street, was flagged for a fire‑department citation (vent/oven noncompliance) and will be brought back for a disciplinary hearing while its renewal is held conditionally. The board also approved conditional renewals for common victualler (outdoor dining/entertainment) licenses (39 conditioned) and food vendors (10 conditioned) where applications remain incomplete.
Four cannabis retailer licenses were noted; three have completed renewals and the fourth (Commonwealth Canna) was approved conditionally to Jan. 13. That vendor requested that the board consider a policy to reduce fees and waive application costs for social‑equity cannabis applicants; staff will place that request on a future agenda. Licensing staff emphasized they will refer any public complaints to the responsible town department for further process and hearings if discipline is warranted.
Rochelle Morrison, the town’s licensing specialist, emphasized her office’s effort to give businesses time to transition and to be flexible during the rollout of the new system.
