St. Helens library wins state grant to digitize local newspaper

The St. Helens Public Library was awarded an Oregon Heritage Grant of $4,323 to digitize recent years of the St. Helens Chronicle, the library director told the board. The work will be done by the University of Oregon and the resulting files will be hosted in the History Oregon Newspapers collection for free public access.
The director said the library lacks a digitized or microfilm record for the Chronicle from 2015 through 2024 and that the grant will expand the library's local-history special collection and help genealogists and researchers. "There is no digitized or microfilm record, collection anywhere," the director said, adding that the project will enhance access for patrons and local historians.
The director also said the Friends of the Library will help with outreach and that Brenda will hand-carry materials to the University of Oregon in part to consult with archivists about related collections. The library did not identify additional funding sources required beyond the grant. The next procedural steps are transfer of materials to the university and public outreach on how to use the new digital resource.
