Summary
At its Oct. 20 meeting the commission heard two grantee highlights: musician Marcus Wells praised recent opportunities and McAllister of the Washington Urban Debate League described the group's first CAH award after three years of applying and outlined program scale and reach.
Two grantees addressed the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities on Oct. 20 to describe recent support and program impact.
Musician Marcus Wells thanked the commission for support and described performing opportunities, saying he was "very appreciative" of events like Sycamore and hopeful for further opportunities for lesser-known bands.
McAllister, program and grants coordinator for the Washington Urban Debate League, said the league received its first commission funding after three years of applying. He told commissioners the program has grown from six schools and about 100 students at its outset to roughly 90 teams this year and expects about 900 students to attend at least one tournament. He said programming is free to students because of donors and grant support and outlined plans to expand toward a long-range goal of serving more students.
Chair Reggie Van Lee and commissioners praised applicants and urged the public and potential grantees to attend workshops and use staff resources. Commissioners also asked colleagues to attend public events such as Poetry Out Loud to support youth participants.
The commission highlighted these grantee stories as examples of how local funding supports artists and youth programming while staff emphasized the importance of final reports and applicant engagement to sustain funding.
