Planning commission approves beauty salon permit for 121 Harrison Avenue

The Harrison Planning Commission voted Oct. 14 to approve a zoning and use permit for a beauty salon at 121 Harrison Avenue in the downtown redevelopment district.

Joette, a Building and Zoning staff member who read the report to the commission, said the applicant intends to open a salon offering skincare, airbrush and cosmetic makeup, lashes and waxing. Staff listed hours of operation as Tuesday 10 a.m.–7 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; and Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. The report said the two-story building includes living space on the second floor and three storefronts on the first floor, with the applicant occupying the middle storefront.

The department recommended approval with conditions to ensure the business meets downtown standards. Those conditions require all waste be disposed of using residential-style containers; any future dumpsters, signage, landscaping or exterior design changes must be submitted to and approved by the Building and Zoning Department; and any structural interior or exterior improvements will require a building permit.

Following a short applicant Q&A to confirm which storefront would be used, a commissioner moved to approve the permit with the listed conditions; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The commission offered brief congratulations to the applicant.

The decision allows the applicant to proceed with the business application subject to the listed administrative approvals; any future changes to signage, exterior paint or structural work must return to the Building and Zoning Department for review.
