Hamilton County lieutenant reports low crime in Crosby Township but warns of rising telecommunications scams targeting seniors

Lieutenant Jeremy DePoli of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office gave the Crosby Township Board of Trustees an August activity report on Sept. 8, saying most recorded incidents were telecom‑type frauds rather than local violent crime.
DePoli said there was one domestic violence incident involving multiple family members that resulted in at least one arrest. He described three telecommunications fraud cases reported to the sheriff's office during August with losses of about $1,000, $17,000 and $1,300. He said 104 total calls for service in Crosby Township were logged in August, with 71 classified as non‑billable details such as traffic stops.
"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," DePoli said, urging residents—especially seniors—to slow down and verify requests for money or gift cards. He described common scams where callers impersonate law enforcement or claim a relative is in immediate trouble and demand payment.
DePoli also explained DVERT, the domestic violence enhanced response team, and said social‑service partners at womenhelpingwomen.org offer immediate support to victims. He encouraged the township to consider outreach to vulnerable residents and to include scam awareness in township communications.
Trustees discussed posting notices on the township website and including scam warnings in newsletters to reach seniors and other at‑risk populations.
