Evendale council appoints two firefighter-paramedics and approves multiple emergency appropriations

The Evendale Village Council on July 1 appointed Scott McCoy and Dominic King as firefighter-paramedics and declared the hiring ordinance an emergency so the appointments could take effect immediately. The presiding officer read the ordinance "appointing Scott McCoy and Dominic King as firefighter paramedics for the village of Evendale and declaring it as an emergency," and the council voted to adopt the ordinance as an emergency.

Council members also reviewed committee reports before the vote. The finance report said June was strong and that receipts exceeded expenditures for the month and year-to-date. Recreation staff highlighted improved pool attendance, a Swim Safe pool recognition for June, upcoming events including a pool bash on Aug. 22, and busy summer program participation. Parks staff announced a ribbon cutting for a new playscape on Aug. 1 and a community "Get Outside and Play Day" at Heritage Farm on Aug. 2.

The service department reported ongoing maintenance and capital work, including progress on park-path railings, salt-bin shingle replacement quotes, and continuing design and documentation for the Recreation Center Phase 3 project. Officials said they received more than 60 applications for seasonal positions and will continue interviews after July 4.

During the fire and police committee report council members were told the fire department proposed reallocating funds previously set for a compressor to install vinyl flooring in shared living areas; the committee supported the reallocation. The police department said two lateral candidates were not passed to the hiring committee and recommended opening a full hiring process in September to address current vacancies and projected 2026 retirements. The council noted two new police cruisers are being outfitted with mobile data computers shared 50/50 with Hamilton County. Officials also said the village communications system has about 800 sign-ups and a goal of up to 2,000.

The council approved additional ordinances affecting the fire department, including appropriations to continue building redesign work, a transfer from the contingency fund to cover uniforms for new firefighters, and an internal transfer tied to a Walmart grant. Each ordinance was read by title, the council voted to suspend the second and third readings where applicable, and each measure was adopted under the emergency clause.
