Mariemont council authorizes parking-lot repave with $77,000 cap; easement with Waldorf limits village leverage

The Village of Mariemont council voted to authorize staff to proceed with JK Mirror for repaving and reconfiguration of the Dale Park/Choice 1 parking lot and to negotiate striping and contribution details with Waldorf School, capping village spending at $77,000 to meet the contractor's Oct. 1 timeline.

Council members described a series of meetings with Waldorf administrators and Choice 1 to clarify layout, the number of parking spaces and maintenance responsibilities. During discussion the council reviewed historical easement agreements with Waldorf; minutes indicate the village's contract with Waldorf explicitly assigns the village responsibility for repaving, while Waldorf contributes to seal coating, striping and snow removal on a 50/50 basis but is not obligated to repave.

Council members said repaving timing matters because JK Mirror needs a deadline confirmation to schedule the work. One mover asked the council to "allow Bill to go ahead and continue to negotiate with Waldorf about whatever the asphalt contribution" and to give Bill authority to confirm JK Mirror so the vendor could meet the Oct. 1 deadline. That motion, including the spending cap of $77,000, passed on a roll-call vote.

Councilmembers and staff noted the village will try to secure Waldorf participation on striping and other costs; several members said stronger direct contributions from Waldorf would be desirable but are constrained by the recorded easement terms. The council also discussed options to slightly adjust the lot layout to recover a few spaces and to coordinate striping with Waldorf.

Next steps: staff (Bill and other designees) will finalize the layout with Choice 1, tell JK Mirror to hold the Oct. 1 slot, and continue negotiations with Waldorf about a contribution for striping; the project timeline aims for completion this fall.
