Geary County officials continued work on a proposed transient gas tax resolution but have not yet reached language acceptable to state reviewers, an unidentified speaker said during a routine county meeting.
Speaker 3 (unidentified) said the draft the county circulated breaks the measure into a baseline 5% transient gas tax and a separate 2% special escrow for public support, a change intended to clarify timelines and use of funds. "We have, like, the transient gas tax, which is the 5% that has been the 5%." Speaker 3 said reviewers nevertheless "came up with new questions" and returned the draft less satisfied than previous versions: "they seemed to like it less."
Speaker 3 said representatives from the Kansas Department of Revenue have participated in the review process and "have been very helpful," but added that some reviewers "are not in support of that at this time," referencing how the county has traditionally handled related items. She warned that certain line-item changes cannot be made until the resolution is finalized: "we can't do that till we get that resolution done."
County officials did not record a vote on the resolution during the meeting. Speaker 3 said a new draft arrived on a recent Friday and that she has repeatedly restructured prior versions in response to review comments; work on the measure will continue.
The discussion did not include a formal timeline for final action; county staff indicated they will keep revising the draft and return with updates to the board.
