Tammy Robinson, Geary County finance director, told the commission the county’s insurance bill had risen substantially over recent years and said staff should explore options to rein in costs.
Robinson said the county’s insurance bill for the year was around $535,000 and that increases from 2023 to 2026 aggregated roughly $110,000 on the policies she reviewed. She noted work‑comp is handled separately and described it as a much larger expense.
Commissioner Giordano had pointed to Saline County’s reported savings after moving to private insurance; Robinson said she was not asserting Geary County could save the same amount but that it would be prudent to solicit bids and quotes to compare KCAMP (the county insurance pool referenced in the transcript) against private carriers. "If we can pull that back out and save that, it would be worth it to at least reach out for bids," she said.
Robinson described savings on specific line items from cleaning up schedules and removing items no longer present, but said the largest increase was in property values on the schedule. She recommended starting a procurement process to get quotes so commissioners can consider changes for the next budget year.
The commission asked staff to pursue quotes and to report back; no formal vote was recorded on procurement next steps during the meeting.
