Grand Island Public Schools' board on Oct. 9 approved the purchase of Digitalis projection, dome and audio equipment for the district planetarium, a core part of a renovation district staff estimated at about $1,000,000.
Facilities staff presented the Digitalis quote of $561,348 (including a 10% contingency on the projectors) and said the district will pay using available district funds — “it could be the general fund. It could be the depreciation fund,” staff said. Trustees heard the project would also require renovation of the foyer and interior finishes and that the total project cost would depend on negotiated pricing and how much professional learning is included.
Planetarium staff described the educational benefits, saying the current 60-year-old star-ball projector is limited and that a modern digital system would allow grade‑level differentiated shows and more community programming. The presenter said the new system would be "extremely user friendly" and would allow students to control displays during lessons, expanding curriculum-aligned experiences.
Board members asked about funding and community support. Staff said the district has been saving in a foundation account intended for the planetarium and that foundation donations could help offset costs, but that grants for such capital projects are limited. A facilities representative said the district plans to self‑perform some work (painting, some electrical and carpentry) to reduce contractor costs, while contracting out specialty exterior and structural work.
Trustees and a student speaker emphasized the project’s curricular and community value. After limited discussion, an unidentified board member moved to approve the Digitalis quote; the motion was seconded and board recorded that the motion passed.
The board did not record a roll-call vote tally in the transcript. Staff said designers will complete contract documents and seek bids in the spring, and they requested authority to secure the Digitalis equipment on the vendor timeline so construction can occur during the summer break.
